Proof of funds: the blocked account
The most common proof of funds is a German blocked account (Sperrkonto). The current requirement for a student visa:
- €992 per month for the length of your stay — €11,904 for one year.
- With a partial scholarship (under €992 a month) you still have to prove the full €11,904 for the academic year, not just the shortfall.
- Alternatives are a formal declaration of commitment by a sponsor in Germany (Verpflichtungserklärung) or proof of a full scholarship.
The amount follows the maximum rate of Germany’s student grant BAföG. In August 2026 the federal cabinet approved a BAföG reform that would raise the housing allowance from the 2027 summer semester, so the blocked-account amount may change then. Check the figure published by the German missions before you apply.
Blocked accounts are offered by providers such as Expatrio, Fintiba and Coracle. You usually need the deposit confirmation before you can apply. After arrival you can withdraw €992 a month.
